Post-Chemical Peel and Laser Skincare Routine: Tips for Faster Healing

You’ve had your chemical peel or laser treatment. Now what?

What you do in the days after a professional skin treatment can be just as important as the treatment itself. Your skin needs time to heal, and the right aftercare can help support that process while protecting your results.

Depending on the treatment, some redness, sensitivity, dryness, flaking, or peeling may be completely normal. The key is knowing how to care for your skin while it recovers and, just as importantly, what to leave alone.

Here’s what to keep in mind after a chemical peel or laser skin treatment.

Why Post-Treatment Skincare Matters

Chemical peels and laser treatments work in different ways, but both are designed to create controlled changes in the skin that encourage renewal.

That means your skin may temporarily be more sensitive than usual after treatment. Your normal skincare routine, including products you use every day without a problem, may suddenly be too aggressive.

Post-treatment skincare should focus on a few basics: keeping your skin clean, supporting its natural barrier, maintaining hydration, and protecting it from the sun.

This isn’t the time to throw every anti-aging product in your bathroom cabinet at your skin. When it comes to recovery, simpler is usually better.

Keep Cleansing Gentle

You still need to cleanse your skin, but you’ll want to be gentle while it heals.

Use a mild cleanser and lukewarm water rather than hot water. Avoid aggressive scrubbing, washcloths, cleansing brushes, or anything else that creates unnecessary friction.

When drying your face, gently pat your skin with a clean towel rather than rubbing it.

Your provider may give you specific instructions about when you can wash the treated area after your procedure, particularly after certain laser treatments. Follow those recommendations even if they differ from your normal routine.

Focus on Hydration

Dryness and tightness can be common after chemical peels and some laser treatments.

A gentle moisturizer can help support your skin barrier and reduce that uncomfortable dry feeling as your skin recovers. Depending on the procedure, your provider may recommend a particular moisturizer or post-treatment product.

Drinking plenty of water is good for your overall health, but topical hydration matters too. Apply moisturizer as directed and avoid products with ingredients that could irritate newly treated skin.

Put Your Active Skincare Ingredients on Hold

If your regular skincare routine includes retinoids, exfoliating acids, scrubs, or other strong active ingredients, you may need to take a temporary break.

Ingredients such as retinol, glycolic acid, salicylic acid, and other exfoliants can be irritating when your skin is already sensitive from treatment.

How long you should wait before restarting them depends on the treatment you received and how your skin is healing.

Rather than guessing, ask your provider when it’s safe to return to your usual products.

Don’t Pick, Peel, or Scrub Flaking Skin

This can be one of the hardest instructions to follow after a chemical peel.

As the name suggests, some chemical peels can cause visible peeling or flaking as the skin renews itself. It can be tempting to pull at loose skin or use an exfoliant to speed things along.

Don’t.

Picking or peeling the skin before it’s ready can increase irritation and potentially interfere with the healing process. Let the skin shed naturally, even if that means dealing with a few days of flaking.

The same applies to any crusting or peeling that occurs after certain laser treatments. Follow your provider’s aftercare instructions and give your skin the time it needs.

Sun Protection Is Especially Important

Protecting your skin from the sun is always important, but it becomes even more important after a chemical peel or laser procedure.

Freshly treated skin can be particularly sensitive to UV exposure. Too much sun during the healing period can increase irritation and may contribute to unwanted changes in pigmentation.

Use the sunscreen recommended by your provider and limit direct sun exposure while your skin heals. A wide-brimmed hat can provide another layer of protection when you need to be outdoors.

And remember that UV exposure can happen even when it doesn’t feel especially sunny outside.

Skip the Heat and Heavy Workouts for a Bit

Depending on your treatment, you may be advised to temporarily avoid activities that cause excessive heat or sweating.

That can include strenuous exercise, saunas, steam rooms, hot tubs, and very hot showers.

Heat and sweat can aggravate already-sensitive skin and make redness or discomfort more noticeable.

Your provider can tell you how long you should wait before returning to your usual workout routine and other activities.

How Long Does Healing Take?

There isn’t one recovery timeline for every chemical peel or laser treatment.

A light chemical peel may involve only mild redness and flaking, while a deeper treatment can require considerably more recovery time. Laser treatments also vary widely depending on the type of laser, treatment intensity, and area being treated.

Your individual skin and treatment plan matter too.

Before your procedure, your provider should explain what kind of downtime to expect and what changes are considered normal during recovery.

When Should You Contact Your Provider?

Some redness, sensitivity, swelling, dryness, or peeling may be expected depending on your treatment.

However, if something doesn’t seem right or your symptoms are more severe than you were told to expect, contact your provider rather than trying to treat the problem yourself.

It’s always better to ask.
